Rita is a beautiful and wise woman. She is a retired family physician and delivered babies for many years. She is also a wife, mother and grandmother. Rita has a natural curiosity and her hobbies are varied. She teaches American Tribal Belly dance, rides Peruvian horses and plays the Native American flute.
For years Rita has practiced yoga and meditation on a consistent basis. However, her “Glimpse of Spirit” story did not happen while meditating or on the mat. Rather, it involved a single moment where she became so present, time stood still. This moment reminds each of us that there is magic in an ordinary day. I am grateful to Rita for sharing her beautiful moment with us.
The experience happened one day last summer. Her husband was out of town and so the early morning task of feeding and taking care of their Peruvian horses fell to Rita. It was a cool, August morning around 6am. The sun was shining brilliantly with dew shimmering on the grass and a soft breeze blowing. Rita had just finished feeding the horses in the back paddock and was carrying a bucket walking along a path towards the barn.
Suddenly, she describes finding herself in a perfect moment.
Rita says, “I entered a strange moment of timelessness. I was moving but time had somehow stopped. I noticed the sunlight, the sparkle of the dew on the grass and the birds singing. It was all there. I was immersed and in the midst of this perfection. At once, I felt a strong connection to a long line of people from the past and all around the world who were simply walking with a bucket in the early morning to take care of their animals. I had never experienced a moment so fully before. There was no striving in this moment and although it lasted mere seconds, it expanded and seemed to go on for a long time. Even now when I recall it, I feel this sense of timelessness and wonderment. I think it was a brief moment of being wholly in the moment.”
Rita brought a poem with her to our interview by Jon Kabat-Zinn. She reports that after that morning in the field, she was struck by how perfectly this poem captured her glimpse of Spirit.
Coming to our Senses –Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD
“Have you ever had the experience of stopping so completely
Of being in your body so completely,
Of being in your life so completely,
That what you knew and what you didn’t know,
That what had been and what was yet to come,
And the way things are right now
No longer held even the slightest hint of anxiety or discord?
It would be a moment of complete presence, beyond striving,
Beyond mere acceptance,
Beyond the desire to escape or fix anything or plunge ahead,
A moment of pure being, no longer in time,
A moment in which life simply is,
And that “isness” grabs you by all your senses,
All your memories, by your very genes,
By your loves,
And welcomes you home.”
For Rita, this mindful moment while humbly taking care of her beloved horses has stayed with her. It reinforced the importance of making mindfulness a priority in her life.
It also reminds us all that being here now is sometimes all that is needed to connect and glimpse Spirit. How simple and perfect is that?
